Foods that lower high blood pressure

Foods to avoid

These foods are known to contribute to hypertension or raise blood pressure:

  • all foods that have “sodium” or the symbol “Na” on the label.
  • diet soft drinks
  • sugar sweetened soft drinks
  • all foods with mould inhibitors and preservatives
  • most sugar substitutes
  • soy sauce
  • canned vegetables
  • baking soda
  • liquorice
  • ready to eat, commercially prepared foods

Drink plenty of fluids

Water is the best drink to help lower your high blood pressure. You should aim to drink about 2 litres of cold water each day. That is about 8 glasses of water. Spread drinking them over your day and they will keep you properly hydrated as well as keeping hunger pangs at bay.
